Les paroles du Bouddha n'ont été consignées par écrit qu'au Ier siècle avant notre ère. Une immense littérature apocryphe s'est développée par la suite en Inde mais aussi à l'étranger - au Tibet sous l'influence du chamanisme, en Chine du taoïsme (chan) et au Japon du shintoïsme (zen).
Il est donc primordial de dégager de ce corpus de valeur très inégale ce qu'est la pensée du Bouddha.
Malgré son refus des spéculations intellectuelles, le Bouddha discute avec les adeptes de toutes les écoles de son temps. Cela le conduit à prendre clairement position face aux grands courants philosophiques (matérialisme, hédonisme, fatalisme...) et à énoncer une pensée originale et cohérente, inséparable cependant de de la méditation, seule voie vers la connaissance de l'esprit, préalable à la délivrance.
Nombreux sont les livres sur le bouddhisme, le plus souvent consacrés à ses variantes tibétaine, chan et zen. L'apport de cet Ainsi parlait est quadruple. 1) Il revient aux textes les plus anciens qui montrent un bouddhisme bien différent de l'idéologie aseptisée imposée sous ce nom par le new age. 2) Il en présente les paroles les plus incisives, qui, loin des supputations et superstitions, s'efforce seulement de reconnaître la condition humaine pour ce qu'elle est, dans sa nudité.
3) Il en donne une traduction bilingue et aussi littérale que possible : car la traduction des termes du bouddhisme dans les langues occidentales est une source majeure de contresens. 4) Il présente le bouddhisme à travers les réponses qu'il donne aux questions essentielles de l'existence humaine.

One of the internationally recognised research fields of the Department of Mongolian and Inner Asian Studies (Eotvos Lorand University) is the multilateral studies of various aspects of Mongolian Buddhism. This topic appears already in Gabor Balint of Szentkatolna's (1844 1913) the first Hungarian Mongolist's linguistic materials, recorded among the Kalmyks in Astrakhan (1871) and the Mongols in Urga (1873). His materials are invaluable sources of 19th-century Mongolian Buddhism. The topic became one of the major academic subjects of Louis (Lajos) Ligeti (1902 1987), the founder of our Department and establisher of the philological research and philology-based education of Mongolian religious, historical and linguistic sources. We, the second and third generations of disciples, adherently follow his traditional methodology, nevertheless try to introduce new research approaches, as in the conference in 2019 and the present volume: i. e. the aspects of «tradition, invented tradition and innovation». The theme of the third conference (2019) and the present collection of articles is a topical one as it is closely connected to such social, political and cultural phenomena as «country branding», «country image», «cultural branding», all of them interwoven with the aspects of tradition, innovation and invented tradition.
